Who We Are
Cadence is a music learning platform operated by Dave McNamara, a sole trader based in Tasmania, Australia. In this policy, "we", "us", and "our" refer to Dave McNamara. Our platform is available at cadencemusic.app.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your personal information. We are committed to handling personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
Information We Collect
We collect the following personal information when you use Cadence:
- Account information: Your name and email address, obtained via Google Sign-In (Google OAuth 2.0).
- Role information: Whether you are a student or teacher, and (for teachers) your school affiliation.
- Usage data: Songs you add or suggest, your instrument choices, learning progress, skill assessments and self-graded song ratings, and class membership.
- Payment information: For subscribing teachers, billing details are collected and processed directly by Stripe. We do not store your full payment card details.
- Communications: Messages submitted through the in-app AI chat assistant.
We collect only the minimum information necessary to provide the Cadence service.
How We Use Your Information
We use your personal information to:
- Create and manage your Cadence account.
- Deliver the core service — including tracking music learning progress, maintaining a shared song library, and enabling teacher–student interaction within classes.
- Allow teachers to view the learning progress and song choices of students enrolled in their classes.
- Process subscription payments for teacher and school plans.
- Improve the product by understanding how the platform is used in aggregate.
- Respond to support queries submitted through the in-app help assistant.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your personal information for advertising or marketing profiling, and we do not sell your data to any third party.
Third-Party Services
We rely on the following trusted third-party service providers to operate Cadence. Each acts as a data processor on our behalf and is subject to their own privacy and security obligations:
- Supabase — Database hosting, user authentication infrastructure, and cloud storage. Data is stored on servers in the United States. See supabase.com/privacy.
- Google — OAuth 2.0 sign-in. Google provides your name and email address to Cadence at sign-in. See policies.google.com/privacy.
- Stripe — Payment processing for teacher subscriptions. Stripe collects and handles payment card data directly. See stripe.com/privacy.
- Vercel — Website hosting and serverless function execution. See vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.
- Anthropic (Claude) — AI model powering the in-app help assistant. Messages sent to the chat are processed by Anthropic's API. See anthropic.com/privacy.
By using Cadence, you acknowledge that your data may be processed by these third-party providers in accordance with their respective privacy policies.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We share your personal information only in the following circumstances:
- With your teacher: If you are a student enrolled in a Cadence class, your teacher can see your name, the instruments you are learning, your level progress, and the songs in your library.
- With other students in the platform: Aggregated, anonymised usage data (e.g. "2 students are learning this song") is visible to other users. Your name is not attached.
- With service providers: As listed above, solely to deliver the Cadence service.
- When required by law: If we are required to disclose information under Australian law or a court order.
We never sell personal information to third parties.
Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service.
- If a teacher's subscription lapses, student and class data is preserved — students retain full access to their learning history.
- If you request deletion of your account and data (see Your Rights below), we will action the request within 30 days.
Children's Privacy
Cadence is designed for use in school music programs and may be used by students under 18, including those under 13. We collect only the minimum personal information necessary — name and email — to operate the service. We expect that schools deploy Cadence in accordance with their own student data policies and with appropriate parental or guardian consent where required.
If you believe a child's data has been collected without appropriate consent, please contact us immediately using the details below.
Your Rights Under the Privacy Act 1988
As an Australian resident, you have rights under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, including the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request correction of personal information that is inaccurate, out of date, or incomplete.
- Request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
- Export your learning progress data (available via the in-app export feature).
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au if you believe your privacy rights have been breached.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details below. We will respond within 30 days.
Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, row-level security policies on our database to enforce access controls, and access controls limiting which users can see which data. While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no online service is completely secure. We encourage you to use a strong Google account password and to report any suspected security issues to us promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Cadence after a policy change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We recommend reviewing this page periodically.
